As 2022, a year of amazing smart tech sector growth, winds down, check out emerging home tech trends and the market forecast for 2023 and beyond.

Market Opportunities for Aging in Place

As a large portion of the US population reaches retirement age and beyond, aging in place has become increasingly popular. Individuals who may have sold their homes and moved into housing for special populations, assisted living, or nursing homes are now choosing to age on their own terms, in their own residences. As part of this movement, contractors and designers have begun crafting solutions to help those aging in place to maintain their independence safely and for as long as possible. Smart home tech can be a fantastic resource for families who wish to fortify living spaces to help loved ones continue to live as they did in their younger years. Voice control and automated shades, blinds, and lighting can help individuals with mobility issues. Smart heating and cooling, paired with smart appliances and smart security, can keep aging homeowners comfortable and safe.

“Voice control offers an elegant solution for those who may have challenges with mobility or poor vision. Why risk getting up to adjust a light switch or a thermostat, and risk falling in the process, if someone with these sorts of limitations don’t have to?” asked Josh.ai’s Co-Founder and CEO, Alex Capecelatro.

“Worrying about how mom and dad are doing as they ‘age in place’ is a major concern for the rest of the family, so remote monitoring is gaining steam in the smart home market,” said Leontine Dixon, reporting on Digital Health and Wellness for Dealerscope. The ability to check in on an aging relative remotely is proving priceless to those who care for them.

Integrated Health and Wellness

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, great emphasis has been placed on creating and maintaining healthy homes. With the help of smart tech, savvy homeowners can now take control of their physical environments by monitoring and modifying the quality of their water and air, as well as managing their energy consumption. Smart tech has also allowed for large-scale home sanitizing via UV light. According to the EPA, the levels of indoor air pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels.

In addition to improved health via cleaner water, purer air, and reduction in bacteria and viruses, smart mirrors can monitor and report on a user’s blood pressure and respiration. Spa-caliber bathrooms are also providing an unprecedented level of physical pampering, helping to reduce stress and work out aching muscles.

Mothers have reported some of the greatest benefits from smart tech, as it takes domestic burdens off their shoulders by giving reminders, turning off lights that are left on, and automating other burdensome daily tasks.

The material choices made in builds and renovations have become very important to homeowners as well, according to Forbes. Nonsustainable materials and materials known to pose health risks are to be avoided and are being replaced with eco-friendly finishes and appliances that provide health-forward solutions like sanitized dishes, effortlessly steamed vegetables, and tidy kitchens and baths without the use of harsh chemicals.

Ten-Year Market Outlook

The global smart home automation market is estimated to grow to $168B between now and 2033. That’s over twice its current value of $72B. Driving the market are promises of safety, convenience, energy savings, and lower utility costs, which have risen since the pandemic began and are expected to rise further. Increased interest in smart home technologies such as AI entices homeowners to create spaces that provide convenience, comfort, and luxury, and smart tech’s expansion into previously untapped markets is providing unprecedented market opportunities. Thanks to the widespread availability of smart home security systems, and the ability for users to expand on those systems, more and more consumers are expected to enter the home automation market.

Responsive Living, the term coined by Acoustic Architects founders, Aaron Flint and Spencer Hauldren, is the concept of seamlessly enhancing the client’s unique lifestyle using smart home technology.
