Now that we’ve introduced you to the possibilities in microgrid energy systems (The Future of Sustainable Energy – Part 1), it’s time to dive deeper into their application. As we continue our interview with JC Murphy, he paints a vivid picture of the cohesive elements of sustainable power. Take a look at the capabilities in intelligent uninterrupted energy and the ever-growing feasibility of autonomous residential and commercial power production.
The Smart Solar Solution
Acoustic Architects (AA): Why is solar design such a brilliant energy solution?
JC Murphy (JCM): Over the past 10 years, the price performance of solar panels and the technology behind it has dramatically improved, whereas before it would have been too cost prohibitive. Also, solar panels have longevity, lasting 25 or more years. They work synergistically with batteries. The batteries store the excess energy gathered during peak hours. And generators back up that system during an outage. Rather than putting that energy back into the grid, the homeowner gets credit for it. Starting in 2022, all new construction in California will be mandated to incorporate solar panels. So we are seeing the technology become mainstream.
AA: How are Racepoint’s energy solutions different from similar competitors?
JCM: Tesla, for example, has done a great job marketing their Power Wall. But it cannot power the whole home during an outage. The Power Wall provides 10-12 kilowatt hours. Racepoint’s solution provides 200-kilowatt hours, which is 20 times as much storage. It will last 15-20 years and can be used every day. The secret sauce is in the module. It not only handles the entire home but also to offers load management technology to monitor the amount of energy the home is asking.
AA: How is sustainable energy evolving currently?
JCM: There is currently immense evolution in solar technology. We are also seeing new battery technology coming into the marketplace. With more people getting involved in the improvements, we will see better price performance as well.
AA: How do renewable energy solutions benefit the environment, sustainability, and grid efficiency?
JCM: This is achieved by using a combination of complete energy management solutions dealing with both generation and storage of power. We are able to monitor the demand coming from the residential or commercial building and offer clean sustainable energy. That provides a distinct advantage for the consumer and the environment.
Smart Energy & Home Automation
AA: Tell us about the synergy between Racepoint and Acoustic Architects?
JCM: Microgrid technology is relatively new. And Acoustic Architects is a super technically competent company. We needed someone of their caliber to design and sell it. They are the expert team for doing just that.
AA: Why is the Nano Grid such a brilliant power solution for smart homes?
JCM: Home automation technology and the home network depend on a constant connection to a power source. If there is an outage from the grid, the home system will either go down or experience a reboot after the generator comes on. With the microgrid, the homeowner never sees a gap in the system connection. Everything continues to run, safely and efficiently.
AA: What are the unique energy needs of the South Florida market?
JCM: Backup power is important in South Florida because of frequent natural disasters. And power grid reliability is aging, which will eventually cause increased Black and Brown-outs as I mentioned before. So a reliable system is imperative.
AA: What do you foresee for the future of residential energy solutions?
JCM: I foresee more scalable solutions for all homes. Not just in large homes. Individuals will be increasingly able to take control and manage, at a residential level the, amount of power they are consuming.
Responsive Living, the term coined by Acoustic Architects founders, Aaron Flint and Spencer Hauldren, is the concept of seamlessly enhancing the client’s unique lifestyle using smart home technology. Responsive Living allows you to interact with your space via touch input, voice command, and predictive automation, placing you in full control of your home.
