Working from home is here to stay. For some, on a full-time basis, and others, at least in a hybrid manner. Your home office should be a setup that not only simplifies your work-life but also allows you to enjoy your weekdays to the fullest.

Take a look at the smart home-office and work-life balance a Coral Gables homeowner created to maximize his company’s productivity during the transition to full-time remote work.

A few months ago, we shut down our main office and teamed up with other tech-based companies to maintain a huddle space in downtown Miami for when we needed it. Our team members now use their home offices and then travel to work sites when needed. Because of the nature of our business, connectivity is imperative. Consequently, my workspace, and my entire home in Gables By The Sea, have evolved considerably.

When the COVID-19 pandemic caused the world to stop spinning and we were forced to reimagine the way we did business, I called my interior designer to find out what I could do to make sure my business didn’t fail. He had some ideas but also referred me to a team of smart home integrators.

Together, they curated a handful of ideal systems for me, created a home office setup that I absolutely love, and at the same time upgraded our home network to support the technology I need to run my office remotely. Our simple internet system and Alexa assistant went out the door. A robust security-centric network and Crestron system came in. My wife and I stayed in the guesthouse during the quick renovation and called it a vacation from work.

The result is a remote working space in our beautiful home with a breathtaking view. I can connect to my team at any time and at insane speeds. My desktop monitor integrates flawlessly with my laptop. Our system is secure, immune to security issues, and allows us to video conference with our investors and partners around the globe, all the while…social distancing.

A battery backup system including solar panels and a generator was also installed during the smart home upgrade. We no longer have to worry about the storms that can knock our area off the grid. With a system that never goes down, I can run my business knowing there will be no disruptions.

Work-life balance is incredibly important to me, and I want the same for my team. We disconnect when the work-day is over and take on-call shifts. I encourage everyone to “shut the door” on their workspace at the end of the day as I do.

One tap on the screen of my Crestron control panel shuts down my office area, and I literally shut the door on my workday. Then I can enjoy my smart home sanctuary with my favorite person, an awesome playlist, and a cocktail on our patio overlooking the bay.
